There isn’t a film without a story — well most times anyway. Pretty pictures can only go so far.
As with all art, part of the process is telling YOUR story. It may be purposefully executed or it may simply be part of the process. Each of us, I believe anyway, leaves a piece of ourselves in every film. We may do it purposefully, or it might just surprise us. Either way it is part of the film making process.
